Humate / Best 1999—2003

Of course, everyone has heard the track Love Stimulation by the then-trio Humate. A track that 95% of the time turns out to be one of the remix versions by 22-year-old Paul van Dyk. His 1993 version with a piano breakdown was so good that it overpowered the inconspicuous original. The rest of Humate’s work, the band it was before 1996 and the solo project of Gerret Frerichs afterwards, is also pretty bland.

However, there was a short period when the only member of the project created incredibly gorgeous remixes at the crossroads of progressive and tribal house. It was the golden time of the noughties, when a 10–12 minute track was considered the norm. “I don’t hear much from Gerret nowadays. However, he is very busy in doing music for commercials and not interested in doing electronic club music anymore,” said his former bandmate Oliver Huntemann in confidence. Let’s listen to an hour-and-a-half mix, when everything was still the other way round.
