Documentary / Moby Doc
Today’s documentary is about Moby. It combines archive footage, poolside stories, staged skits, animation and photos from the past. It’s amazing how Moby documented his life in great detail. Fame caught him already bald—let’s see here what his hair used to look
At the very beginning of the documentary, Moby answers why the world needs another film about someone famous. He says that many people think that if they get fame, money, women and attention, it will automatically bring them happiness. “But I tried. And it didn’t work.” Moby Doc could be called the shortest retelling of the musician’s two autobiographies (Books: Porcelain as well as And then it fell apart), but with minimal preaching and a heavy emphasis on the music, punk, DJing and electronica, with stories about different creative periods, rises and falls. Of course, the film is also about the Play era. Only towards the end of the documentary do Moby’s peculiar activism, actionism and moralising begin to seep in. But, thank God, by that time the credits roll.
