A brief history of Ragga Jungle

There have always been elements of Jamaican music in jungle. Musicians actively used deep bass from dub. In the early days of reggae, chants were mixed with breaks while DJ sets, according to Jamaican tradition, were diluted with MCs’ hollers and shouts. So the question of rapping over the whole track was a matter of time. Ragga Jungle is aggressive rapping (ragga) in Jamaican English with frenetic siren samples, barks and gunshots, together with fast and intricate breaks (jungle). Becoming popular in 1993—1994, ragga jungle began to be associated with all jungle. Those who didn’t agree splintered the movement and created a new genre, drum‘n’bass.
